Bald try on

Bald filter: see yourself bald before you shave

The bald filter puts your own face in several bald looks side by side, from one photo: a clean shave, a short buzz and a thinning look, each with and without your beard, plus a sheet to show your barber.

Your turn

Try the bald filter on your photo

One photo straight to the camera, forehead and hairline visible, hair pushed back.

Method

How the bald filter online works

  1. 01

    Upload one photo

Face the camera, forehead and hairline visible, hair pushed back, even light. A cap or a hood hides what the filter needs.

  2. 02

    See the sheet

A clean shave, a short buzz and a thinning look, each on your own face, with and without your beard.

  3. 03

Compare the bald looks side by side

The sheet aims to keep your face, skin tone and light the same in every look, so only the hair changes.

  4. 04

    Decide, then show your barber

Download the crops and the printable sheet to show a partner, a friend or your barber before anything is cut.

The result

What would I look like bald? What the sheet shows

One photo, one sheet. Everything comes from the portrait you upload.

Report outline

The sheet

Several bald and buzzed looks of your own face side by side; the sheet aims to keep one face and one light.

Beard on and off

Each look with your beard as you wear it and without it.

Crops to share

Square and portrait crops to download and share.

A printable page

Bald filter glossary: the bald and short cuts a barber names

The words a barber uses, so the sheet you take there reads the way your barber talks. A short buzz is one way to see the shape of your head in real life before you shave.

Shaved head

All the hair shaved from the head; also called bald by choice.

Buzz cut

A short cut where the hair is about the same length on every part of the head; it rose with manual hair clippers. Buzz cuts are popular with men who want a short, low-maintenance style and with those with thinning or receding hairlines.

Butch cut

A buzz cut whose top is clipped to one uniform short length.

Fade

On a fade, a buzz cut variant, the back and sides are tapered short, semi-short or medium, matching different clipper guard sizes.

Shave, buzz or wait: how the bald preview helps

Deciding about your hair can weigh on you. The sheet puts the options on your own face, so you can decide at your own pace.

Shave

The sheet shows your face with a clean shave, with and without your beard.

Buzz

A short clipper cut in the same light, to compare with the shave. A buzz keeps some length, so it is a smaller step than a shave; both grow back.

Wait

Keep your hair for now and come back to the sheet later: seeing the looks does not mean you have to choose.

Pattern baldness

Male and female pattern baldness is a permanent kind of hair loss that usually runs in the family.

Hair that grows back

Other hair loss may be temporary, from illness, stress, cancer treatment, weight loss or iron deficiency; hair lost to a medical condition usually stops falling out or grows back after recovery.

Treatment

Most hair loss does not need treatment: it is either temporary or a normal part of getting older. See a GP if you are worried about it.

Sun on the scalp

With thinning hair, put sunscreen on your scalp or wear a wide-brimmed hat.

Why people shave their heads

Head shaving, or bald by choice, has a long history and many reasons.

Many reasons

People have shaved all or part of their heads for aesthetics, convenience, culture, fashion, practicality, religion or style.

Hair loss

People with hair loss may shave their heads to look more presentable, for convenience, or for a style.

More common now

People with alopecia areata or pattern hair loss often choose to shave their heads, which has become much more common and socially acceptable since the 1990s.

How to take a photo for the bald filter

The bald filter works from what the photo shows, so show your face, your forehead and your hairline.

Do

  • Face the camera

Look straight into the lens, chin level, the whole head in the frame.

  • Show your hairline

Push your hair back or tie long hair behind your head, so the forehead is clear.

  • Use even light

Face a window, out of direct sun: even lighting shows your skin tone as it looks in person.

  • Whole head in frame

Leave some space above your head: the more of it the photo shows, the less of its shape is an estimate.

  • Beard as it is

Keep your beard as you wear it today: the sheet shows it on and off.

Don't

  • No caps or hoods

Anything on your head hides the shape the bald look has to follow.

  • No beauty filters

A filter changes your face and skin, and the bald filter would start from the filtered photo.

  • No group photos

One person in the photo, and that person is you.

An AI bald filter that aims to keep your face

The bald filter changes the hair and aims to leave the rest of the photo alone.

Your face, not a stock head

The filter works on your own photo: it aims to keep your face, ears, skin tone and expression in every look.

One light

Every look on the sheet aims to keep the same light and framing, so you compare the hair, not the photos.

Head shape from your photo

The filter follows the head shape your photo shows. Where hair covers the scalp, that part is an estimate.

Beard on and off

Each look comes with your beard as you wear it and without it, side by side.

A check before the sheet

Each look is checked for distortions, such as a warped face, before it goes on the sheet.

Scope

What the bald filter can and cannot show

A photo can show

  • Your own face with a clean shave, a buzz or a thinning look
  • Each look with your beard and without it
  • One sheet that aims to keep the same face, skin tone and light
  • Crops and a printable sheet for your barber

A photo cannot tell

  • The shape of your scalp under your hair: that part is an estimate
  • Why your hair thins, or whether it will grow back
  • How your own hair will change over the years
  • Whether you look good: it gives no rating

Shaving your head is a big step and it can weigh on you. The sheet lets you look at the options on your own face, at your own pace, before anything is cut.

Note

A bald filter photo, not a diagnosis

The bald filter changes a photo; it does not look at your scalp or your health. Some hair loss is permanent and some is temporary: the NHS says hair loss caused by a medical condition usually stops or grows back once you have recovered. If you are worried about your hair loss, see a GP or a dermatologist.

Limits

What a bald filter preview cannot promise

The bald filter shows a possible look made by a model. It cannot see the shape of your scalp under your hair, and it says nothing about why hair thins: for hair loss, talk to a GP or a dermatologist.

FAQ

Bald filter questions

How to check what you look like bald?

Upload one front facing photo to the bald filter. It puts your own face in a clean shave, a buzz and a thinning look side by side, so you can see each before you shave.

How would I look bald?

The sheet shows you: several bald looks on your own face, with and without your beard, in the same light. It is a possible look made by a model, not a promise.

How can I tell if I would look good bald?

The bald filter does not rate you. It puts the looks side by side on your own face, so you, and the people you ask, can judge them on you.

Is there an app to see how I would look bald before I shave it all off?

Yes: this bald filter works as an app in your browser, on a phone or a computer, and puts your own face in a clean shave and a buzz side by side, from one photo.

Do I need to download a bald app?

No. The bald app runs in your browser on a phone or a computer, with nothing to install.

Is the bald filter free?

Trying it here is free: the form takes no card, no account and no trial, so nothing renews and nothing needs cancelling.

Can I snap a selfie on my phone for the bald filter?

Yes. Open this page on your phone, use the front camera at eye level, push your hair back and face a window. One clear photo is enough.

Is the bald filter also a buzz cut filter?

Yes: the sheet shows a short buzz next to the clean shave, on your own face and in the same light. For longer cuts, try the AI hairstyle changer.

What is the difference between a shaved head and a buzz cut?

A shaved head has all the hair shaved off; a buzz cut keeps hair of about one short length all over. The bald filter shows both, side by side.

Does the bald head filter follow my real head shape?

It follows the shape your photo shows. Where your hair covers the scalp, that part is an estimate, so a photo with the hair pushed back helps.

Should I shave or wait?

Only you can decide, and there is no hurry. A buzz keeps some length, so it is a smaller step than a shave; both grow back. Your barber can help you get there in steps.

Will it keep my beard?

Each look comes with your beard as you wear it and without it, side by side.

Does it work if my hair is long or curly?

Yes. Pull long or curly hair back so the hairline and the forehead show; where hair covers the head, its shape is an estimate.

Can AI keep my face and features the same while making me bald?

The bald filter aims to change only your hair and keep your face, ears, skin tone and light. A model makes the image, so treat it as a possible look, not a guarantee.

Can hair grow back after balding?

It depends on the cause. The NHS says pattern baldness is permanent, while hair lost to a medical condition usually stops or grows back after recovery. A GP or a dermatologist can tell you more about your own hair.

Will it predict how my hair will thin?

No. The bald filter shows a set of looks, not a forecast of your own hair.

Can a bald preview help if I am anxious about losing my hair?

It can let you look at the options calmly, at your own pace. It cannot tell you why your hair thins: if that worries you, a GP or a dermatologist can.

Can I use a photo of someone else?

No. Use a photo of yourself, and only if you are 18 or older.

Thinking about shaving it all off?

Try the bald filter with your photo and look at the options on your own face before the clippers come out.
