Hair color try on

Hair color try on: see new shades on your own photo before you dye

The hair color try on puts several shades on your own hair side by side, from one selfie: natural browns, blondes and reds, highlights and bold colors. Pick the one you want and get photos in it, plus a brief for your colorist.

Your turn

Try a hair color on your photo

Start with one clear selfie: daylight, hair loose and visible, your current color as it is.

Method

How the AI hair color changer works

  1. 01

    Upload one selfie

Daylight from a window, hair loose and visible, no filter. Your current color is the starting point, so leave it as it is.

  2. 02

    See the board

Natural browns, blacks, blondes and reds, highlights and balayage, and bold colors, each on your own hair, on one board.

  3. 03

Compare the shades side by side

The changer aims to find your hair and recolor it, not paint a mask over the photo, keeping your face, skin, length and light the same in every shade, so only the color differs.

  4. 04

Take the one you want to the salon

Mark your favourite and get a set of photos in it to download, with a brief that names the shade family and what to ask for.

The result

What the hair color try on gives you

One session, one board. Everything comes from the selfie you upload.

Report outline

The board

Several hair colors on your own hair, side by side; the board aims to keep one face and one light.

Shade families

Natural tones, highlights and balayage, and bold colors on the same board.

Your set

A set of photos in the shade you pick that aims to keep the same face, length and light, to save and share.

Brief for your colorist

The shade family or highlight pattern written out in the words a salon uses, next to the photos.

Hair color words to tell your colorist

The names a salon uses for where the color goes and how it is put on, so the brief you take there uses them too.

All-over color

All of the hair colored one new, solid color, put on at the scalp.

Highlights

Sections of hair treated with lighteners, so lighter strands run through your own color.

Lowlights

Sections of hair treated with darker hair colors.

Balayage

Color painted straight onto sections of the hair by hand, with no foils to keep it contained.

Ombré

Hair dark at the crown that turns lighter bit by bit towards the ends.

Toner

A product used to slightly alter the undertones of the color, for example on bleached hair that has turned brassy or yellow.

Root touch-up

Color put only on the newest regrowth, usually the first inch of hair nearest the scalp.

What hair color suits me? Warmer and cooler shades on you

Model photos and swatches show a color on someone else's hair, not on yours. The board puts warmer and cooler shades on your own photo side by side, so you choose a direction yourself.

Warmer and cooler

Warmer and cooler shades on the same board, each on your own hair.

Side by side

The board aims to keep one face and one light on every shade, so the color is what changes.

Your choice

Never a score and never a verdict: the board shows the shades, and you choose with your colorist.

Permanent, demi-permanent, semi-permanent and temporary hair color

The hair color changer shows a color on a photo; a dye does it through chemistry. These are the four common kinds of hair color, and bleach, which lightens.

Permanent
Generally contains ammonia and is mixed with a developer; a stronger developer lifts more of the natural pigment, for a lighter result.
Demi-permanent
Uses an alkaline agent other than ammonia, with a developer; it cannot color hair lighter than it was.
Semi-permanent
No developer and no ammonia; it cannot lighten hair and typically lasts four to eight shampoos.
Temporary
Sits on the surface of the hair, is typically brighter, and comes out with a single shampoo.
Bleach
Lightens hair by breaking down its darker pigment; bleached hair can turn brassy or yellow.

How to take a selfie for the hair color try on

The try on works from the hair the photo shows, so show all of it in plain light.

Do

  • Use daylight

Face a window, out of direct sun: warm lamps and shade both change how a color looks.

  • Hair loose

Let your hair fall as you wear it, with the lengths and the ends in the frame.

  • Face the camera

Look straight into the lens with the whole face and the hairline in the frame.

Don't

  • No filters

Beauty and color filters change your skin and hair, and the try on would start from the filtered photo.

  • No hats or scarves

Anything on your head hides the hair the color has to go on.

  • No tinted light

Coloured lighting and sunsets change how warm and cool shades read.

  • No group photos

One person in the photo, and that person is you.

Change hair color app: virtual hair color try on in your browser

Nothing to download: the hair color app opens in the browser you already have and works online, on a phone or a computer.

One selfie

A front facing photo in daylight, with your hair loose, is all it starts from: from your phone's front camera or from your gallery.

On a phone or a computer

Take the selfie with your front camera and see the board on the same screen, or upload a photo you already have and compare the shades on a bigger screen.

Natural and bold shades

Brown, black, blonde, red and auburn sit on the same board as highlights, balayage and vivid colors.

Side by side

Every shade sits on your own hair, and the board aims to keep the same face, length and light, so you compare the color, not the photos.

Photos to save

The shade you pick comes back as a set of images to download and save.

A brief for the salon

The shade family or highlight pattern written out, to show your colorist next to the photos.

Where your natural hair color comes from

Any dye works on the color you start with. Human hair color comes from two pigments.

Two pigments

Black or brown eumelanin sets how dark hair is; pheomelanin colors it orange and red. All human hair has some of both.

Black and brown

Most of the pigment in black and brown hair is eumelanin; brown hair has more eumelanin and less pheomelanin.

Blond

From pale platinum to dark gold blond, with only small amounts of both pigments.

Red

From strawberry blond to copper, auburn and fully red: the hair with the most pheomelanin.

Gray and white

Not a gray or white pigment but a lack of it; gray hair typically comes naturally with age.

Hair color names, from chestnut to platinum blond

Natural hair color can be black, brown, blond or red; these are some of the shades in between.

Chestnut

A reddish shade of brown hair, darker than auburn.

Auburn

One of the shades of red hair, with titian and copper.

Strawberry blond

A mixture of blond and red hair.

Platinum blond

The palest blond, close to white.

Ash or sandy blond

A blond with more eumelanin; more pheomelanin makes a golden blond instead.

Your starting hair color matters

What a dye can do depends on the hair it goes on.

Going lighter
Hair can only be lightened with chemical lighteners such as bleach; semi-permanent color cannot lighten it.
Gray and white hair
With semi-permanent color, gray and white hair does not dye to the same shade as the rest of the head.
One flat color
A one-color permanent dye gives a uniform color across the head; highlights or lowlights over a base color are the modern way around it.
Upkeep
Permanent color needs monthly or six-weekly upkeep to match the new growth.

Scope

What the hair color changer can and cannot show

A photo can show

  • Several shades on your own hair, side by side
  • Natural tones, highlights, balayage and bold colors on one board
  • One board that aims to keep the same face, length and light throughout
  • A written brief for your colorist

Only an expert with it in hand can tell

  • What a dye will really do on your hair
  • Whether your hair can go lighter without bleach, or how it takes the color
  • A new haircut or style: that is the hairstyle changer
  • A rating of your looks or a verdict on which color is right

Your colorist knows your hair in person. The board helps you arrive with two or three shades you have already seen on your own hair.

Caution

A hair color photo is not a dye formula

The try on helps you choose a direction, not mix a color. Before any dye, follow its directions: the U.S. FDA says to do a patch test on your skin every time before you dye your hair, and not to dye your eyebrows or eyelashes.

Note

Free hair color try on: no card, no sign-up

Trying the hair color try on here is free. The form asks for no card, no account and no trial, so there is nothing to cancel.

Limits

What a hair color preview cannot promise

The hair color try on shows a possible look made by a model, not a dye formula. Your starting color, past dye and hair type decide what a real color does: ask a colorist, and patch-test any dye as its directions say.

FAQ

Hair color try on questions

Is there a free AI hair color change tool online?

Trying this hair color try on here is free: the form needs no card, no account and no trial. It runs online in your browser, from one selfie.

How can I see what I look like with different hair colors?

Upload one selfie and compare the shades side by side on your own hair; the board aims to keep the same face and light in each, so you judge the color on you.

Can AI tell me what color my hair should be?

It shows you, it does not decide for you. The board puts warmer and cooler shades on your own hair side by side. Never a score.

What hair color suits me best?

The try on does not pick for you. It puts warmer and cooler shades on your own photo side by side, so you judge them with your colorist.

Does my natural hair color matter?

Yes. Dye works on the color you have, and going lighter takes a lightener: the developer in a permanent dye, or bleach. A colorist can tell you what your hair can do.

My hair is dark. Can it show me as a blonde?

It shows the look on a photo. On real hair, going much lighter means lightening first: a semi-permanent or demi-permanent color cannot make hair lighter. Ask a colorist what your hair can take.

What about my clothes and makeup colors?

That is the color analysis side of the same question, a check of its own.

Is there a free app to see different hair colors on yourself?

This hair color try on works as an app in your browser, with nothing to install, and trying the form here is free.

Is there a good app for checking hair color on me before dyeing my hair?

This hair color app puts the shades on your own photo side by side before you dye, so you see them on you rather than on a model.

Do I need to download a hair color app?

No. It runs in your browser on a phone or a computer, with nothing to install.

Do I have to pay to try natural shades like brown or black?

Brown, black and blonde sit on the same board as the bold colors, not on a board of their own. Trying the form here is free.

Is the virtual hair color try on free?

Trying the form here is free and starts no subscription. It asks for no card, so nothing renews and nothing needs cancelling.

Is this a hair color filter, or does it change the hair itself?

The try on aims to find your hair and recolor only the hair, keeping your face, skin and background, rather than tinting the whole photo.

Will the virtual hair color look natural and still look like me?

The try on aims to change only the color and keep your face, length, texture and light the same in every shade. A model makes the image, so treat it as a possible look, not a guarantee.

Can I compare multiple hair colors side by side before deciding?

Yes, that is what the board is for: natural and bold shades on your own hair, on one screen.

How can I use virtual hair color previews to show my stylist what I want?

Bring the photos of your pick and the brief, which names the shade family or highlight pattern. Bring a photo of your hair as it is today too.

Highlights, balayage or a full color change: how do I choose?

Compare them on your own hair on the board. The color words above say what each one means, so you can ask for it by name.

Can it also change my haircut?

No, the color only. For a new cut, try the AI hairstyle changer.

Will the try on rate how I look?

No. It shows shades on your photo and never scores your face.

Can I use a photo of someone else?

No. Use a photo of yourself, and only if you are 18 or older.
